Have you ever wondered why music changes your mood? Psychologists have discovered that while playing music, a neurotransmitter called dopamine is released in the brain which causes you to be happier. Dopamine is a rewarding stimuli that is released when eating tasty food, taking certain drugs, and being apart of happy experiences such as blowing out your birthday cake candles. Listening to a song that is amusing and stimulating to the ear causes a "feel good sensation" that makes your brain tell you you are happy. Almost all parts of your brain are involved during the process of listening to music. The regions dealing with movement, planning, attention, and memory are all involved. These regions are called your temporal, parietal, occipital, and frontal lobe. (For more information on what each lobe does, read this blog post! Parts of the Brain) Music psychology is such a cool thing to do with your psychology degree if you are interested in going to school for music as well! Treating illnesses with music is very beneficial and can change moods drastically.
