Fields of social work practice: Alcohol and substance abuse

Alcohol and substance abuse is another crucial field of social work practice. At least four other persons are affected by some unhealthy, negative, and destuctive manner by every individual experiencing a drug or alcohol problem. Substance abuse is highly correlated with murder, suicides, health problems, domstic violence, and accidents.

Social work specializing in this particular field recognizes physiological, sociological, and psychological factors and help to prevent and treat alcoholism and substance abuse. Social workers help not only the clients themsleves but also their families.

Important factors effected by substance abuse:

1. Physiological- physical addiction, disease or physical disorders, medical problems, inherited risk, mental disorders with physiological causes

2. Sociological- ethnic and cultural differences, family background, education, employment, peer relationships

3. Psychological- social skills, emotional level, self image, attitude toward life, defense mechanisms, mental obsessions, judgment, decision-making skills

As alcohol and substance abuse became one of our society's biggest problems, the number of social workers working in this field have increased as well.
