Prompt 8

BY: MELISSA

Psychology is a field that is based off of research. At Michigan State there are many different opportunities to get hands-on experience in the field of Psychology. For my psychology class, I have completed 9 hours of research by participating in multiple research studies. Some examples are “Color Estimation and Strength Experiment” and “Personality and Life Study”.

We are not allowed to disclose what happens in the studies but I can describe what all of them had in common. To participate in a research study you first have go online and sign up for a specific time slot for which ones you would like to take part in. After you successfully sign up for one and go to your assigned place, you sign a consent form and the research assistant basically goes over the rules for that particular study. Once they finish you go into a separate room and complete the study.

Psychology research labs are a lot different than the typical classroom lecture style because you get a more hands on learning experience and really get to apply yourself to the field of psychology. If you are planning on becoming a psychologist, these labs are particularly helpful for learning because they are based off of research and that really applies to that career.

These hands-on experiences really get me excited for my future because in a few years I hope to become a research assistant and hopefully put that work experience on a resume for graduate school. These hands-on research labs allowed me to realize that if I do go into the field of psychology then it is going to be a lot of research and work but in the end should be very rewarding!
