Biopsychosocial Approach Broken Down

BY: MELISSA
Do you think psychology is a really confusing field? Can’t seem to wrap your head around what psychology is all about? Well you’re in luck! My blog post today will contain three easy ways to break down the science of behavior and mental processes easier. In psychology we learned about the “biopsychosocial approach”, which basically considers the influences of biological, psychological, and social-cultural factors to understand basic behaviors and mental processes of human beings.

The first major influence is biological. To figure out what someone may be thinking we may use genetic mutations or genetic predispositions, which are genetically influenced traits. Another great way that is also biologically influenced is the natural selection of adaptive traits and behaviors passed down through generations.

The second major influence in helping us break down psychology is psychological influences. These include emotional responses and cognitive processing and perceptual interpretations too. Growing up we collect a lot of learned fears and other learned expectation so these also are considered psychological influences.

Social-cultural influences are the last major influence on determining behavior and mental processes. These come from the human’s surroundings both socially and culturally. The presence of others is a huge aspect of this category because there are many influences that come through peers and groups, not to mention the cultural, societal, and family expectations a person could be experiencing. Another big part of this category is compelling models in media such as celebrities.

In conclusion, those are the three main ways to understand why a human behaves or processes things a certain way. If you have any questions feel free to ask them below in the comment section!
