Psychologists are very important in the United States. Several people suffer from different mental illnesses and need assistance managing their feelings and coping with how they feel in order to continue their daily lives under normal circumstances. Psychologists are non-medical doctors who specialize in human behaviors, interactions, and the study of the mind. They are able to help people who are suffering from mental illnesses.

In order to become a psychologist, you need to obtain a license. This is required in every state. To go about doing so you will first need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in psychology. While working on a bachelor degree it could also be very useful to get some experience in the field through mentorship. Volunteer work can also help someone gain some experience. Once you get a bachelor’s degree you will need to find a graduate program to attend to get a master’s degree. You will also need to choose your specialty. There are several different kinds of psychologists and each one obtains different degrees and attends different classes, so you’ll need to make a decision on what exactly it is you want to do. Most fields require a doctorate, so you will need to complete a doctorate in psychology. After you do so most states require you to do a two-year supervised internship. Once the internship is completed you are then ready to get licensed. You must pass a national exam, and sometimes you are required to present a case study to a board of psychologists. Requirements vary in each state so it’s important to check your states requirement early on in the process.

Getting a psychology degree can open up many opportunities for several different careers. You can do research with a psychology degree and do studies to learn more about the mind and the way people think, or you can directly talk to people and help them. It is a very rewarding job and is one of the most popular undergraduate degrees in the country.
