This week I decided to do some research about what types of jobs you can get with a degree in psychology, besides the obvious. Of course you can become some type of psychologist with a psychology degree, but there are a few other jobs you can get too. It also depends on how high of a degree you obtain. Some of the obvious jobs that you can get with a psychology degree are a bit of a trap. For example, becoming a psychiatrist is very common for those pursuing a degree in psychology but to become a psychiatrist you also need a medical degree.

Becoming a social worker is a rather common thing that people do with a psychology degree that’s a little less obvious. A social worker is someone who works with people who are going through difficult periods in their lives. They provide a safeguard for these people and protect them from harm and provide support for whatever situation they may be dealing with. Usually, the specialize in certain age groups and/or situations, whether it’s dealing with children, elderly, those with disabilities, and more. They work within several different locations to make sure people are safe.
Media careers are a less typical career pathway that people with a psychology degree can sometimes obtain. Since those with a psychology degree know a lot about human behavior their knowledge is very useful to those in the media industry. They are able to analyze problems and give feedback on how things may affect the audience. Psychology graduates also are able to communicate well and give knowledgeable advice.
Human resource and communication careers are also another good choice for psychology graduates. Human resource jobs typically require you to take care of employee satisfaction, training, recruitment, payroll, internal communications, and much more. These tasks require you to work closely with people, so since psychology graduates have quite a bit of knowledge on people and how to interact with them this makes them a perfect fit for the job.
