Clinical Psychologists

BY: SKYLLAR

There are several different branches of psychology. Clinical psychology interests me the most at the moment. Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness and disability. Clinical psychologists teach people to cope with stressful situations, overcome addictions, improve their relationships with their husband, wife, or parents, and break through barriers that keep people from reaching their potential. They allow people to continue their normal daily lives while coping with whatever issues they may be facing. They also give psychological tests to analyze patients’ cognitive strengths and weaknesses to get a better understanding of how to assist them.

To be a clinical psychologist you should have strong communication skills, good writing skills, high ethical standards, clear boundaries, and the ability to focus. Becoming a clinical psychologist takes just as long and just as much work as any other kind of psychologist. There isn’t a huge difference between a clinical psychologist and psychiatrist, except that a clinical psychologist isn’t considered a medical doctor like a psychiatrist is. Psychiatrists are also allowed to prescribe medications. Clinical psychologist also make slightly less than general psychologists and other types of psychologists. There is a 19% job growth for clinical psychologists through 2024.
